Potsdam itself developed into a center of science and is home of three public colleges and more than 30 research institutes.

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (aka Mecklenburg-West Pomerania) with a population of 1.6 million is the least densely populated and least industrial German state. Its capital is Schwerin, largest and the only city with a population above 100,000 is the harbour city of Rostock. The coastline of the Baltic Sea, including islands such as Ruegen and Usedom, as well as the Mecklenburg Lake District, features many holiday resorts and unspoilt nature and make this state to a top destination for intra-German tourism, traditionally many from Berlin.
