Baden-Wurttemberg is Germany’s third-largest state in terms of size, population, and economy. The state capital and largest city is Stuttgart. Most of the other 8 major cities straddle the banks of the river Neckar. The river Danube has its source in the Black Forest, the main mountain range of the state, and the river Rhine forms the western border as well as large portions of the southern border. Although relatively few natural ressources compared to other regions of Germany, the sate is among the most prosperous and wealthiest regions in Europe with a generally low unemployment rate. A number of well-known international operating enterprises are headquartered here and in spite of this, Baden-Wurttemberg’s economy is dominated by small and medium-sized enterprises.
