Lower Saxony is Germany’s fourth largest state in population (8 million) and the second largest state by land area. Agriculture, strongly weighted towards the livestock sector, has always been a very important economic factor. Consequently, the state has a big food industry, mainly organized by small and medium-sized enterprises. Manufacturing like shipbuilding, biotechnology and steel is another large part of the regional economy. The car maker Volkswagen with its five production plants within the state’s border still remains the single biggest private-sector and a thriving supply industry is centred around its regional focal points. Capital is Hanover, other importent major cities are Brunswick, Oldenburg and Osnabruck.
Bremen and Bremerhaven together comprise the state of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. As a commercial and industrial city with a major port on the River Weser, Bremen is the second most populous city in Northern Germany and home to dozens of galleries and museums.
